Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) For Adults
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Adults?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected. It is widely supported by research and is considered a gold standard treatment for a variety of emotional and psychological difficulties.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, stuck in negative thought patterns, or struggling with low mood, CBT offers practical tools to help you take back control and move forward with confidence.
What Can CBT Help With?
CBT is effective for a wide range of difficulties including:
- Anxiety (Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety)
- Depression and low mood
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Health Anxiety
- Phobias
- Low self-esteen
- Stress and burnout
- Sleep difficulties
- Perfectionism
How Does CBT Work?
CBT is based on the idea that the way we think affects how we feel and behave. By identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, we can shift emotional responses and change behaviour in meaningful ways. In essence, it rewires the way we think and behave.
In therapy, you will:
- Learn to spot patterns in your thinking.
- Understand how thoughts influence emotions and actions.
- Develop healthier, more balanced thinking habits.
- Learn to “respond healthily” to situations rather than “react unhelpfully”.
- Build coping strategies to manage daily stress and long-term challenges.
The BABCP is the accrediting body for CBT Therapists. They have produced a helpful short video explaining CBT and its benefits which you may find useful.
What to Expect in CBT for Adult
CBT is typically short to medium-term (6-20 sessions), and sessions are collaborative and structured. We will work together to identify goals, explore challenges, and develop practical strategies that fit your lifestyle and values. CBT is different to counselling – we will deal with the current problems rather than focusing on the past.
You can expect:
- Weekly or fortnightly sessions (usually 50 minutes)
- A focus on present difficulties (with some exploration of past influences)
- Between-session tasks to practise new skills
- A safe, non-judgmental space for growth and self-reflection
