How to cope with Covid induced anxieties

Well, 2020 has been a unique and challenging year, to say the very least! A year which we will (hopefully) never experience again in our lifetimes. So, when it comes to dealing with the challenges that have been thrown at us, it is understandable that most of us have struggled on some level, given we have not been in this situation before, so we cannot compare and reflect.

Understandably, many of you will be experiencing feelings of Covid related anxiety as we muddle through this tough time. Anxiety disorder can be mild or severe but in all cases…pretty unpleasant. In order to combat anxiety, it’s essential to arm yourself with coping strategies. Here are my top tips:

Take things one day at a time

The events of this year have stripped us of forward planning and instead forced us to live in the present, slow down and take things day-by-day. This isn’t entirely a bad thing. Yes, it’s not as easy to book a holiday months ahead anymore, but refocusing on just your day ahead (or perhaps the week ahead) has enabled a slower paced way of life which can keep you grounded and avoid overwhelming ourselves with lots of plans.

Focus on what you CAN control

Don’t give your mind the chance to run away with thoughts of overwhelming gloom relating to things that you simply can’t control. This is a drain on your time and energy. Instead re-adjust and focus on what you CAN control in your life and make positive changes. Nothing is going to be perfect and run smoothly all of the time, but by making the best of your own situation you will feel more in control.

    Reduce media consumption

Scrolling through social media stories or watching the news bulletins is enough to flood our minds with negative thoughts and worry. The constant stream of information we are bombarded with can make you feel stressed and anxious in a matter of minutes! Some of this barrage of communication is media-hype and most won’t be applicable to you and your situation. So rather than work yourself up by consuming everything, set a limit on how long you’re spending consuming media and be aware of where your media is sourced.

    Move your body

Exercise is a great way to lift a dark mood and reenergise your body and mind. Even a short stint of exercise is enough to release those ‘feel good’ hormones, so whether it’s inside or outside, get yourself moving!

    Practice gratitude

Reflecting on three things each day that you’re grateful has been proven to significantly increase mental and physical health. Gratitude shifts your mindset and allows you to appreciate all that you have. This could be anything, ranging from having a roof over your head, down to much smaller things, such as a conversation with an old friend. Whether it’s morning, noon or night, find a time that works for you.

    Self-compassion

Take time to work out what makes YOU happy and enables you to feel your best. Make these NON-NEGOTIABLES and build them in to your daily/weekly routines. It’s easy to prioritise others and push ourselves to the bottom of the list, particularly when juggling work, family, friends etc. But remember- ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup’ so be kind to yourself, you’re doing your best.
